Why Choose a Prosthodontist Over a Dentist?
Prosthodontists are specialist dentists who have completed their general dental training at a University for a minimum of 5 years, and have practiced general dentistry for at least 2 years before undertaking an additional 3-year full time university course which leads to Specialist Registration with the Dental Board of Australia.
If you want to check whether the provider you are considering using is a qualified and registered Specialist Prosthodontist, you can check the Academy of Australia and New Zealand Prosthodontists data base (www.aanzp.com.au) by entering the provider’s name and search if they are a qualified Prosthodontist or not. You can also check registration details with the government regulator for all health practitioners. Visit the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) website, enter the providers name and then select Dental Practitioner. A Prosthodontist has ‘Specialist Dentist’ appearing after their name, the same way other disciplines of dentistry such as an Orthodontist, Periodontist, Endodontist etc. also do.
